During summers, heat is a big challenge and it is normal to feel claustrophobic inside a closed space. However, the actual reason is poor ventilation which can lead to humidity, mould growth, damaged walls and low oxygen levels.
To keep the humidity levels under control, you should install an extractor fan in those areas exposed to moisture. But that is easier said than done. How do you install an extractor fan? We have put together a post to help you get through the installation process. And remember, you could either install an extractor fan on a wall or ceiling.
Types of extractor fans
There are three types of extractor fans available in the market.
- Axial extractor fans: An axial fan is typically mounted on a wall, usually on an internal wall, and depending on the cavity depth, it requires a duct to reach the exterior wall. Axial fans are mostly installed in kitchens, bathrooms and other wet areas.
- Centrifugal extractor fans: Ceiling-mounted centrifugal extractor fans require longer duct pipes. They are used in commercial and industrial environments,
- Inline extractor fans: Inline extractor fans are installed in the loft space above a ceiling and are found both in homes and commercial properties.
Extraction fans come in different sizes and the size you need depends on the area of the room as well as the amount of air that needs to be removed in a specific period.
How to install an extractor fan?
Choose a location: To install a new extractor fan, the first step is to choose the location. If you are installing a fan in the ceiling, make sure that there is enough room in the loft to place the fan. For your safety, always check for hidden wires and pipes using an electronic detector.
Cut a hole: Once you have decided on the location on the ceiling or wall, trace out a hole on the plaster or drywall. Make sure that the hole is based on the size of the fan you are about to install. Then cut around the outline using a pad saw to create a hole and carefully remove the debris and waste material. If you are installing a fan on a window you will need to make a hole in your wall.
Install the exhaust fan: Once the hole is cut, place the fan in the hole and tighten the screws on the rim. Finally, push the cover plate into place. Connect the fan to a vent via a duct that runs through the roof of your home or an outside wall, depending on where the fan is installed.
You will need a qualified electrician to make appropriate electrical connections. The extractor fan can either be operated by a separate control or connected to the light switch in your bathroom.
Materials you would need to install an extractor fan
- Pencil to mark the hole
- Pad saw to cut the hole
- Drill and drill bits to fit the fan
- Ducting
- Stepladder to reach the installation location
- Screwdriver
- Gloves and goggles for safety
The moist air in a bathroom not only ruins the paint on the walls but also the wooden cabinets and fabric. An extractor fan can remove moisture or bad odours from your bathroom and help refresh the air. RS Components have an array of extractor fans whether you want to replace your current fan or need a new one.
